## Can I use Apple Configurator to install that IPA to my iOS11 iPhone?

**Yes—Apple Configurator can install an Ad Hoc IPA without Xcode connecting to the phone for debugging.** Apple explicitly documents this installation method. [Apple’s instructions](https://help.apple.com/xcode/mac/current/en.lproj/devade83d1d7.html)

Your IPA must:

- Actually support iOS 11, including all embedded frameworks.
- Be signed for **Ad Hoc distribution**, with a valid certificate and provisioning profile.
- Include your iPhone’s **UDID** in that provisioning profile.

To install:

1. Connect the iPhone by USB, unlock it, and accept **Trust This Computer**.
2. Open **Apple Configurator on your Mac** and select the iPhone.
3. Drag the `.ipa` onto the device, or choose **Add → Apps → Choose from my Mac** and select it. [Configurator instructions](https://support.apple.com/guide/apple-configurator-mac/cad4cd08c03/mac)

**The remaining uncertainty is whether your installed Configurator version will communicate with iOS 11.** Apple’s current documentation doesn’t explicitly confirm that old version’s compatibility. Try the steps above first; if Configurator rejects the device’s OS, you’ll need an older compatible Configurator/macOS setup.

Configurator bypasses the need for Xcode’s debugger support, but it cannot make an iOS 12+ IPA run on iOS 11.

## Q: How do I sign my app for Ad Hoc distribution and export it to ipa? And where do I include my iPHone's uDID in provisioning profile?

**You register the UDID in your Apple Developer account, then select that device when creating the Ad Hoc provisioning profile.** Xcode embeds the profile into the app when exporting the IPA.

For your iOS 11 device, use an archive built with an iOS 11-compatible toolchain, such as Xcode 13.2. Signing does not change OS compatibility.

**1. Register your iPhone’s UDID**

- Connect the iPhone to your Mac and trust the computer.
- In Apple Configurator, open the device’s information and copy its **UDID**.
- Open [Apple Developer → Devices](https://developer.apple.com/account/resources/devices/list).
- Click **+**, choose the appropriate platform, enter a device name and its UDID, then register it.

This happens in **Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles**, not App Store Connect. [Apple’s registration guide](https://developer.apple.com/help/account/devices/register-a-single-device)

**2. Make sure you have a distribution certificate**

In Xcode:

- Open **Xcode → Preferences → Accounts**—called **Settings** in newer Xcode.
- Select your Apple account and paid team.
- Click **Manage Certificates**.
- If you don’t already have a usable distribution certificate, click **+ → Apple Distribution**.

Create it on the Mac you’ll use for exporting, so its private key is available there. An existing certificate also works if its private key is installed. [Apple’s signing guidance](https://developer.apple.com/help/account/provisioning-profiles/edit-download-or-delete-profiles)

**3. Create the Ad Hoc provisioning profile**

Open [Apple Developer → Profiles](https://developer.apple.com/account/resources/profiles/list):

1. Click **+**.
2. Under **Distribution**, select **Ad Hoc**.
3. Select the App ID matching your app’s bundle identifier.
4. Select your distribution certificate.
5. **Check your iPhone in the devices list. This is where its UDID gets included in the profile.**
6. Name the profile, such as `MyApp Ad Hoc`, then click **Generate → Download**.

If your app includes extensions, each extension needs its own matching profile. [Apple’s profile creation guide](https://developer.apple.com/help/account/provisioning-profiles/create-an-ad-hoc-provisioning-profile)

**4. Archive and export the IPA**

In **Xcode 13.2**:

1. Open your project and select the app’s scheme.
2. Select **Any iOS Device (arm64)** as the destination. Your iPhone doesn’t need to be connected.
3. Choose **Product → Archive**.
4. In Organizer, select the archive and click **Distribute App**.
5. Choose **Ad Hoc**.
6. For a straightforward export, set app thinning to **None**, if offered.
7. Choose **Manually manage signing**.
8. Select your distribution certificate and the profile you created. Use **Import Profile** if it isn’t listed.
9. Finish the wizard and click **Export**.

The exported folder contains your `.ipa`. Xcode signs it during this process; you don’t need a separate signing command. [Apple’s distribution workflow](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/distributing-your-app-for-beta-testing-and-releases)

Then drag that IPA onto your iPhone in Apple Configurator.

**If you register another device later, regenerate the profile and export the IPA again.** Registering a UDID does not update profiles already embedded in exported apps.

## in step 4.8 I got the error saying "Profile doesn't include the selected signing certificate" even though I've selected my Distribution certificate and the Ad Hoc provision profile I just created

That error means **the exact certificate selected in Xcode isn’t included in the profile Xcode is using**. Two certificates can both display `Apple Distribution: Your Name` while being different certificates. Profiles contain specific certificates, not just a team or certificate name. [Apple’s explanation](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/technotes/tn3125-inside-code-signing-provisioning-profiles)

Try this:

1. **Identify your local signing certificate.**
Open **Keychain Access → My Certificates**, find your **Apple Distribution** certificate, and expand it. It should have a **private key** underneath. Double-click the certificate and note its **serial number** and expiration date.

If there’s no private key, you need to import the certificate and private key (`.p12`) from the Mac where it was created, or create a new distribution certificate through Xcode. Downloading a `.cer` alone won’t restore the private key. [Apple’s signing guidance](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/Xcode/sharing-your-teams-signing-certificates)

2. **Match it to the certificate in the Developer portal.**
Open [Certificates](https://developer.apple.com/account/resources/certificates/list). If there are similarly named distribution certificates, download the relevant `.cer` and inspect its serial number in Keychain Access to identify the exact match.

3. **Regenerate your Ad Hoc profile with that certificate.**
Open [Profiles](https://developer.apple.com/account/resources/profiles/list), select your profile, and click **Edit**:
   - Select the matching distribution certificate.
   - Keep your iPhone checked in the devices list.
   - Save/generate and download the updated profile.

Apple supports changing the certificate and devices when editing a profile. [Profile editing instructions](https://developer.apple.com/help/account/provisioning-profiles/edit-download-or-delete-profiles)

4. **Import the freshly downloaded profile during export.**
Cancel the current export and start **Distribute App → Ad Hoc → Manually manage signing** again. Choose the matching certificate and use **Import Profile** to select the new file, avoiding a stale profile with the same name.

If your archive includes extensions, check each extension’s profile too: all must include the certificate selected for export.

**You normally don’t need to rebuild the archive or revoke any certificates to fix this export-time mismatch.**
